Winter in retreat in West but more snow in East
Winter Weather Report No.8
Birmingham, UK, Wednesday 8th March 2006 — The severe cold of recent days has left the UK and much of western Europe, but over coming days, the battle line between cold and mild will produce further snow for much of eastern and northern Europe. It may have been 21 Celsius in Alicante on Tuesday, but temperatures again fell to near -30 Celsius in Finland and across much of Germany, Poland and central Europe, severe frost was recorded last night. Over coming days, a series of low pressure systems will track south and east across central Europe, likely to produce copious snowfall in eastern Germany, Poland, southern Scandinavia and possibly the Baltics with severe frost, night and day, once again an issue for most of Norway, Sweden and Finland. The European Radar picture shows bands of snow already moving east into Germany and Switzerland – a thaw will follow into the west.

Mild, wet, and windy
Through into Friday, most of the UK will see much higher temperatures than of late and water companies may breathe easier as spells of locally heavy rain sweep in from the west – any snow confined to mountain tops in Scotland. Strong winds may affect some of the southern UK airports at times though. Later Friday, the cold weather may briefly reappear in Scotland and eastern England with some rain and sleet with snow on hills moving southwards as the winds once again turn to the northeast.
European Ski Outlook Good
March is often traditionally a good month for Alpine skiing with longer days and snow pack at its greatest. This year looks no exception with further heavy snowfall expected in the next few days. WSI’s mesoscale forecast model for central Europe shows further snow tomorrow morning in the Austrian Alps in particular, although freezing levels will be rising over Switzerland and France with rain at lower levels. Prague may well be affected by moderate snowfall during tomorrow mornings rush with Northeast Germany still cold and dry.
