Prepare for another Arctic blast after the weekend!
Winter Weather Report No.9
Birmingham, UK, Wednesday 15th March 2006 — Traditionally by mid-March, much of the snow cover over Europe would be restricted to mountains and temperatures would be on the rise into the low teens Celsius, at least in the south, but 2006 is proving the exception. Much of Scandinavia has seen temperature anomalies for the first half of the month of -6 Celsius and only Spain and Portugal have seen temperatures above normal. Highs of 25 Celsius may well be attracting traffic to The Algarve and Seville in coming days, although even here it looks like cooling down with Lisbon seeing some of the warmest weather today. However, for northern Europe, a renewed blast of Artic air is set to sweep in by next week with Scandinavia, the UK, Germany and central Europe seeing further snowfall and very low temperatures. Airports such as Inverness and Aberdeen in the UK may well face further snow issues from Sunday onwards along with southern Sweden, northern Germany and Denmark.

Brief respite
Whilst some wintry showers will move in from the east across the UK over the next 24 hours, most of the snow is likely over the higher ground, although perhaps Leeds/Bradford will see some further accumulation through Thursday. By Friday, slightly less cold air will be moving in, though overnight frost will be an issue in much of the UK and Europe away from the far Southwest. The weekend too may be quieter in most places, but expect some patchy fog in central Europe.
Repeat Performance
The cold weather will be moving south over northern Norway and Sweden through the weekend, arriving in much of the UK and central Europe by Monday. Expect frequent snow showers around northern and western coasts and widespread overnight frost which may become sever again in snow covered areas. Certainly below -10 Celsius is likely in sheltered locations in the north. Even the London area may see some snowfall overnight. At least on Wednesday, weather issues are hard to find with the latest European radar showing just light snow over Germany.
